Aerial Silks Jesyka Sham

Hi everyone, my name is Jesyka Sham and I am the Head Instructor of Flying Fitness. I wanted to tell you a little bit more about what we do at Flying Fitness.

Most students arrive, nervous but excited, not really knowing what it is they are getting themselves into… Aerial Silks is one of the most beautifully challenging movement art-forms I have ever come across. With my background in dance, flow arts, martial arts and gymnastics- I have taken everything I have learnt and used it to master the silks in a safe and efficient way. When you come to class you will enjoy our 15 min(+-) warm-up, on the ground, before starting to fly. This warm-up starts with dynamic movements to get joints and muscles lubricated, physiotherapy exercises to switch on the muscles and stretches. This warm-up prepares the body for what ever movements are going to happened. We then move over to the silks where we can begin our lift-off. We enjoy moving slowly on the silks, climbing, stretching and preparing the body for any bigger movements we may want to execute in the class. We focus on learning new techniques or practicing and perfecting old ones. We build confidence and overcome fears together. Towards the end of the class when you are feeling nice and worked, we condition. We will challenge ourselves in the conditioning by doing sets of movements focusing on all the muscle groups- since you need all of them to be strong and flexible for silks. We then do a nice warm-down, this helps so much with recovery for the days following and you really feel it if you don’t do the warm-down!

Every student is on their own journey with the unique bodies holding strengths and weaknesses. Our goal is to assist you in turning your weaknesses into strengths and then overcoming anything that is holding you back from enjoying the silks and your body in movement. We do not expect you to arrive like this- but we know with dedication and consistency we can help you shift your body and mind into a stronger more durable state! Aerial silks will give you goals to focus on, it will show you where what you need to work on and it will give you so much more than you ever expected if just let it.
